This is a response to Kathleen Parker’s 16 July 2013 Washington Post article,
“Why was Zimmerman allowed to walk around armed and loaded?” Link: wapo.st/12Ha8Ad
A well-written piece; however, Kathleen, is it is wrong to legally own & carry a gun? No, but you suggest that it possibly is, and that we live in a current reality that must change. Unfortunately, there’s no way to reverse our conditions. One commenter cited statistics of reduced crime in America, but cold statistics never tell the story of personalized dangers in countless neighborhoods like Zimmerman’s. When police are unable to protect the residents, frustration levels rise leading to action from “wanna-be cops” like Mr. Z. There is no doubt about the complexity of this case, but the take-away is clear. Young Black males have created a stigma for themselves by conducting criminal activity that creates the necessity (right or wrong) for “vigilante” justice. Do we just lay down & allow these violations? Moreover, no matter what the unclear situation was, Trayvon had no excuse for exercising the local habit of “whoop-ass” upon Zimmerman. Yes, a 17 year old kid’s death is a tragedy, but the harsh truth is he brought it upon himself through his proven prior criminal habits, anti-social attitude, & beating Zimmerman. Attitude? You can say it’s developed from our society’s racial bias, but that’s an extremely worn-out excuse perpetuated by irresponsible Black leadership that encourages backlash hatred (equally unjust as bias against Blacks) based on American colonial slavery & subsequent racial bias.
It’s time for the Black community to evolve from archaic excuses and playing the infamous race card to responsible action to gain success in America. It can be done. Many Blacks have moved from being Black to being an American. Will the current demagogues like Sharpton and Jackson allow this? Probably not. They label as “Uncle Toms” those Blacks who have abandoned the “poor me/victim” mentality and rose to responsible and successful American citizenship. These myopic power-hungry political agenda-driven agitators must be ignored so that Blacks can progress. More at http://wp.me/pXvyI-e6 “Black Leadership Perpetuates Racial Inequality”
